Notice the high reputation David had with Achish, a Philistine king. How did he earn that reputation (1 Samuel 29:3,6,9)? Was it really so? See 1 Samuel 27:8-12. Despite David’s good relationship with Achish that was built on deceit, the other kings in Philistia were not going to take any chance with him joining their armies in the war against Israel. The objection was providential, and it saved David from any embarrassment at the war front.

David was clearly not living out God’s plan, and we see him getting into a tighter corner and more trouble. However, God overruled David’s failures for His own purpose. What does this teach us about God’s dealings with His people? Note also that king Achish did not insist on having his way with the other kings and their commanders. Instead, he listened to their objection and sent David back to base, away from the war front. In so doing, the eventual defeat of the Israelite army along with the death of Saul was achieved without David being part of the instrument that God used (1 Samuel 31).
